関係詞には関係代名詞と関係副詞があります。

関係副詞の先行詞
関係副詞の先行詞を確認します。

When の使い方
制限用法、非制限用法、when の省略、先行詞の省略に分けて検討します。
[制限用法]
Sunday is the day when I relax at home.
（日曜日は私が家でリラックスする日です。）
先行詞 the day を when 以下の節で修飾しています。
[非制限用法]
He had been staying in Japan in March 2011, when the Great East Japan Earthquake occurred.
（彼は2011年3月に日本に滞在していたが、その時に東日本大震災が起きた。）
先行詞 March 2011 を when 以下の節で言及しています。制限用法のように when 以下が先行詞を限定していないことに注意が必要です。
[when の省略]
Sunday is the day when I relax at home. → Sunday is the day I relax at home.
（日曜日は私が家でリラックスする日です。）
when が先行詞（例文の場合は the day）の直後にあるときは省略することができます。
[先行詞の省略]
Sunday is the day when I relax at home. → Sunday is when I relax at home.
（日曜日は私が家でリラックスする日です。）
when の先行詞（例文の場合は the day）がなくても誤解が生じるおそれがない場合は先行詞を省略することができます。
同様に the time, month, week などを省略できます。
August is the month when many people take a vacation. → August is when many people take a vacation.
（８月は多くの人々が休暇を取る月です。）
Where の使い方
[制限用法]
This is the house where I lived for 20 years.
（これは私が20年間住んでいた家です。）
先行詞 the house を where 以下の節で修飾しています。
[非制限用法]
They arrived in New York, where they stayed for two days.
（彼らはニューヨークに到着し、そこに二日間滞在しました。）
先行詞 New York を where 以下の節で言及しています。制限用法のように where 以下が先行詞を限定していないことに注意が必要です。
[where の省略]
This is the place where I lived for 20 years. → This is the place I lived for 20 years.
（ここが私が20年間住んでいた場所です。）
先行詞が place の場合は、where を省略することができます。
[先行詞の省略]
This is the place where I lived for 20 years. → This is where I lived for 20 years.
（ここが私が20年間住んでいたところです。）
where の先行詞（例文の場合は the place）を省略する場合があります。
Why の使い方
[制限用法]
That is the reason why I learn English.
（それが私が英語を学ぶ理由です。）
先行詞 the reason を why 以下の節で修飾しています。
why には非制限用法はありません。
[why の省略]
That is the reason why I learn English. → That is the reason I learn English.
why を省略することができます。
[先行詞の省略]
That is the reason why I learn English. → That is why I learn English.
先行詞 the reason を省略することができます。
How の使い方
This is how she solved the issue.
(これが彼女がその課題を解決した方法です。）
how は先行詞を取りません。
[how の言い換え]
the way を使って言い換えることができます。
↓
This is the way that she solved the issue.
↓
This is the way she solved the issue.
一例目で that を関係副詞として使い、二例目で that は省略されています。
“the way how” という使い方はしません。
That の使い方
that は when, where, why, how の代わりに使えますが、省略されることが多いです。
when
Sunday is the day when I relax at home.
↓
Sunday is the day that I relax at home.
↓
Sunday is the day I relax at home.
３例目で関係副詞は省略されています。
where
This is the house where I lived for 20 years.
↓
This is the house that I lived for 20 years.
↓
This is the house I lived for 20 years.
３例目で関係副詞は省略されています。
why
This is the reason why I learn English.
↓
This is the reason that I learn English.
↓
